Does the city of Chicago have the right to ban firearms?

Two Terms ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the District of Columbia v. Heller that the 2nd Amendment conferred an individual right to keep and bear arms.

In typical anti-gun fashion the City of Chicago, ET AL., are trying to do an Ad hoc revision of the 2nd Amendment, based on their interpretation, de jour. It's important to remember that these elitists always want laws to apply to the common law-abiding citizen that they always seem to exempt themselves from. How many times have we seen members of the so-called anti-gun community defend themselves from harm by using a firearm? Of course they always have some flimsy justification for using the very firearm that they seek to deny the rest of us access to.

Could it be that they feel their life is worth more than ours or just that they have better judgement than us when it comes to the use of a firearm. After all, why don't they just dial 911 like they tell us to do?

The truth is they are not only arrogant elitists, but they also bring naivete to new pinnacles. They believe that passing another gun law will prevent people intent on doing harm from going on to a school campus and shooting innocent people like fish in a barrel.

We recently had a number of people murdered at Ft. Hood Army base by a terrorist who was able to shoot his victims without worry of being shot at by his victims. How could that happen? All of those trained warriors and not a one of them is permitted to have a firearm on base.

We've seen school and workplace killings in places that were supposedly 'gun-free zones. 911 failed these people. They arrived in time to call the coroner and the next of kin. Sorry, I want a little better odds for my family, friends and me. You keep 911 on your speed-dial and I'll keep my firearm. The odds will improve substantially for me and mine.

As for Otis McDonald, he realizes that his best chance of living to a ripe old age is to keep his cholesterol low, don't smoke, exercise and have a firearm for his own protection. The police have a poor win/loss record when it comes to protecting the rest of us. When it comes to buying into the notion that the police can protect you, Caveat emptor - Latin: Let the buyer beware.

Samuel Colt and Valentine's Day

While I often lament over what to get my perfect gal on Valentine's Day, often falling back on roses, chocolate or dinner, this year there was a scary reason my lovely bride dropped hints that she wanted a gun more easily carried than her Colt Commander 1911.

We live quite a few miles apart, unfortunately, and a serial rapist has struck more than two dozen times in the rural area in which she's living to care of our handicapped daughter and our four grandsons. I'm 6 1/2 hours away on a good day. When a rapist strikes, 1 second is too far and 911 is too late.

This jerk, who apparently walks to his victim's homes or apartments (so there's no vehicle description), has begun severely beating the women afterward. The 1911 is undeniably one of the best self-defense firearms ever designed, but it's heavy enough that a woman might think twice before tossing it in her purse if she has a CCW. It adds bulk to a girlish figure and our daughter is a quadraplegic, so getting her in and out of the van and through stores is exhausting enough without John Moses Browning's ultimate design adding to the workout.

So this year, instead of roses or even a card, I bought her a Ruger LCR. It's not nearly as "modern" as Browning's 100-year-old design, but it has some twists. It's double-action-only and hammerless, so if a bad guy shows up, she can run the gun from her purse without ever removing it, knowing all five shots will rotate into battery because there's no slide or hammer to get caught up in that purse's clutter.

As for the fine folks who don't think guns are the answer, I've been blessed enough to become friends with a variety of handicapped people who have routinely carried guns. I also got to see some of them draw on bad guys. When they pulled, bigger and more muscular, fully ambulatory criminals cowered and ran. The quote about Colt is right.

My wonderful daughter's fingers no longer work, so she doesn't qualify, but I'm glad to know my wife has her covered with a lightweight Valentine's Day gift chambered in .38 Spl. +P.

Do as I say, not as I do

You've heard the old saying, "Do as I say, not as I do."? Well, apparently Homeland Security subscribes to that policy.

According to a Federal Times.com story "Homeland Security Officers lost nearly 200 guns in bowling alleys, public restrooms, unlocked cars and other unsecure areas, with some ending up in the hands of felons."

Security is part of Homeland Security's title, no?
"I do not believe this word means what you think it means."
